Description

The residence is part of the Palazzo Bruciato property, a property with an important history which gave its name to the street on which it stands. Until the unification of Italy, the palazzo was a splendid country house and the building which is now the John Hawkwood’s Mansion was a farmhouse. The palazzo originally belonged to the rich and powerful Ardinghelli family. In 1364, it was burned to the ground by the English condottiere John Hawkwood, known as Giovanni Acuto, a mercenary fighting for Pisa who set fire to the houses on the Montughi hill and the Poggiolo area. From then on, the palazzo was known as Palazzo Bruciato (the Burnt Palace) and its ruins became a symbol of the horrors of war and its terrible consequences. The palazzo was by no means the only building outside of the city walls to be destroyed by enemy attack, but the mutilated beauty and majesty of this building made its destruction particularly memorable.
The palazzo was rebuilt with two floors and a tower; it has an internal loggia and courtyard, a large room for plants and a surrounding garden. Until the beginning of the twentieth century there were also stables and barns, vegetable gardens and a farmhouse which is now the John Hawkwood’s Mansion. Over the years, the farmhouse and its surrounding lands have changed to accommodate the expanding city and make way for Via Carlo Pisacane. The construction of this road claimed part of the farmhouse, the barn and some stables as well as the vegetable gardens. The building’s present façade is the result of restructuring work in the 1930s.
The palazzo has had various owners over the years. After the Ardinghelli in the fourteenth century it was home to the Malegonnelle and then Messere Piero Beccanugi in the fifteenth cenury, Bernardo de’ Medici in the sixteenth, followed by the Ubaldini, the Bonaccorsi, the Ciardi da Cigoli, the Malaspina, the Gori, the Paoli, the Orsi, the von Pelka and the Rapisardi.
